First of all, please know that having a ukulele at home is in no way a requirement. Although, having a ukulele at home will multiply your child's chances of success. This one is a little more expensive than that $8 recorder, but I guarantee that it will be so much more pleasant.
So, what kind of uke do you buy? Here are some great options. Get a Soprano uke if you can.

If you're out shopping and you find a fantastic deal (or you think you did), check for these things first:
1. Make sure the tuning pegs point out to the side, rather than the back.
2. When you turn the tuning pegs, make sure the strings stay in place. A lot of cheap ukuleles won't be able to hold a tune because the pegs won't hold the strings in place long enough.
3. Check the sound. Some kids like the way wood sounds better than the painted kinds. This one is all about preference.
4. Ask about the strings. Sometimes you can get a good ukulele, but it can become great by replacing the strings.
If you have any other questions, please email me or comment below. I'm happy to help.
